TO PROTECT THE FEET.
Ono is often asked the best way to harden and generally to protect the feet during a walking tour. The first thing is to be sure you have a suitable pair of shoes. Thick leather shoes whose sole will withstand rough wear, will give good support to the instep and the sides of the feet. Never buy a new pair of shoes for a walking tour; but use an old pair which you know are comfortable and have already been well " walked in."
If you are not used to walking you will be wise each morning before starting to put some soap on your feet under your socks, and also some more soap over your socks between them and your shoes.^ Bathing your feet twice a day in a little methylated spirt also helps to harden the skin; and after the day's walk this may bo done, after previously washing them in warm water. Jf you get a blister anywhere on your foot the best thing to do is to put a small piece of adhesive plaster directly over the sore place, and renew the plaster each day after bathing. This will pro-'' tect it from further irritation from rubbing.
