EARTHQUAKE RISKS.

WANGANUI COLLEGE. BUILDINGS STRENGTHENED. // Extensive structural alterations to the buildings of the W&nganui Collegiate School and St. George's Preparatory School have.been undertaken by the board ef trustees as a precaution against earthquakes. A thorough examination of all the buildings was made by Mr. C. Reginald Ford, .> of Messrs. Gummer and Ford, architects, of Auckland. In the light : of Mr. Ford's report to the trustees, the | earthquake risks to the buildings were carefully considered by the respective architects who had designed them. Although assured that there was little ■r-'likelihood of danger to the occupants of the various buildings, the trustees ini structed their architects. to prepare plans and specifications in order to provide additional strength wherever it would b» at all ritecessary or useful. Tenders were invited and a contract has been let. The alterations consist .of generally strengthening the structure by means of steel framework; heavy trusses and ties to roofs, removal of' all outside brick gables,' pediments, and projections. Special attention has been given to. the school chapel,' - school block and dormitories. The works have already been commenced and it is intended to have the'major part completed before the beginning of next term.
