[fbom our own correspondent.] ..HAMILTON, Thursday. The South Auckland golf championship ' tournament was commenced to-day at St. Andrew's links, Te Rapa. A few light showers fell and a cold westerly breeze was" blowing. The'greens were in excellent condition. The tournament attracted 63 entries from all parts of the province. Play in the championship will be started to-day. MATCHES AT ROTORUA. ROSS WINS VETERANS' CUP. TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.! ROTORUA, Thursday. The Veterans' golf tournament was continued on the ■ Rotorua Club's links today under indifferent weather conditions, cold showers alternating with glimpses of sunshine. Play "was surprisingly good and the isiiae was in doubt to the finish. Remits were as follows: Veterans' Cup.—Semi-finals; W. D. Ross (Frankton) beat Redhead (Rotorua), 5 and 3; E. H. Liddle (Miramar) beat Wilkio (Rotorua),'3 up. Final: Ross beat Liddle, 3 and 2. Veterans' Trophy.—Semi-final: H. Hoc ton (Auckland) beat Worthington (Rotorua), 2 up; J. M. Somerville (Auckland) beat 15. H. Hutchison (Gisborne), 3 .and 'l. Final: Somerville beat Horton, 2 up. In the final of the cup Ross held the Sdvantage early - in the game and led throughout, 'attaining a lead of five up lit the seventh, turning three up. In the trophy final there was little to chooser between the players. The game was one of varying fortunes and the .dinner asserted himself by winning the iast three holes. ' Keen interest was taken in the prizegiving ceremony, Mr. F. Wilkie, patron of the club, making special reference to the growing popularity of the fixture. Mrs. v Wilkij presented the trophies. The dinner of the cup, Mr. W. D. Ross, complimented the club on the splendid conditior,: of the course; Mr. J. M. Somerville ®ndoiiring this opinion. Other speakers followed in eulogistic terms.
