INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

DECREASE LAST MONTH. FOUR AUCKLAND DISTRICTS. A remarkable decrease in the number of cases of infectious disease notified in the four Auckland districts in August is shown when the figures for the month are compared with those for August, 1930. The total for last month was 137, whereas that for the corresponding month last year was 243. The total for July this year was 148. The greatest number of cases notified last month were of diphtheria, the total being 64 for the four districts, compared with 62 cases in July and 62 in August, 1930 There were 30 cases of tuberculosis last month, compared with 27 in July and 15 in August last year, and 20 cases of scarlet fever, against 20 in July and 33 in August. 1930. Only one caso of pneumonic influenza, which occurred in the South Auckland district, was reported in the past month. In the Auckland central district thore were 42 case 3 of diphtheria, 23 of tuberculosis, 11 of scarlet fever, eight of erysipelas, two of pu- rperal fever, and one each of poliomyelitis and eclampsia, making a total of 88 cases. The total for the district in July was 72 and in August, 1930, 139 cases. Fifteen cases ot diphtheria were reported in the South Auckland district, there being four cases of scarlet fever, two of tuberculosis and puerperal fever and one of pneumonic influenza. The total number of cases was 24, compared with 34 in July and 64 in August last year. The returns for the North Auckland area show four cases of scarlet fever, five of puerperal fever, three of tuberculosis and one each of diphtheria, enteric fever, erysipelas and eclampsia, a total of 16, as against 30 the previous month and 31 in August, 1930. The total for the Thames-Tauranga district was nine, comprising six cases of diphtheria, two of tuberculosis and one of scarlet fever. The total in July was 12, and in August, 1930, nine cases.
