DOBBIE BEATS ROBERTSON. CLOSE FINISH AT BRISBANE. NEW ZEALANDER'S FINE FIGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received September 3. 8.55 p.m.) BRISBANE. Sept. 1. In the final of the singles in the Australian bowling championship to-day Dobbie (Victoria) beat H. A. Robertson (Onehunga), 31—30. In the semi-finals Robertson beat Maughan (Queensland), 31—17, and Dobbie beat Lowe (New South Wales), 31—28. Tho match between Robertson and Maughan was one of tho finest games of draw-shot bowls seen in Brisbane for years, although Maughan was beaten soundly. Robertson was not afraid to play a cannon ball drive when it was demanded. He ran to 11 points before Maughan opened his score. The final was a very evenly-contested game and the result was in doubt until the final head. Robertson led, 21—20, and the scores were level several times before the finish. Dobbie, who is a former Australian champion, prevailed by the narrowest margin. Robertson was accorded an ovation for his splendid fight. Maughan beat Lowe for third place, 31—23.
