FORM AT NEW PLYMOUTH

SEATOWN IMPRESSES. AVONDALE CUP PROSPECTS, ORAPAI MUCH IMPROVED. [FROM OUR OWN CORUESrONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The racing at the Tarannki Hunt meeting at New Plymouth 011 Saturday was really good. Particular interest was centred in flat performers who had not raced for eomo ntontliß and many of thorn gavo encouraging displays. Although ho was defeated the performance of Seatown in the Members' Handicap was very impressive. He was racing over a distant that is usually regarded as being too short for him, yet he was always within striking distance and if ho had not met with interference half-way down the straight ho might have ivoii. Ho has been working well and provided that he goes on in the right way lie is sure to be one of the favourites for tlio Avondale Cup. Richfield put up a good performance, as ho covered a lot of ground coming into the straight and then ran on well. Tho race should improve him and 110 should strip fit at Wanganui. Balloon ran a great race into third place. Ho was at least four or five lengths behind the field when they settled down, but put in a great run over the last threo furlongs. He was actually second GOyds. from home, but Soatown finished too woll for him. Easter Time Disappoints. Easter Time was a disappointment. He pulled himself to the front after going three furlongs ond led round tho turn into the straight, but then compounded. It would appear that he is not as forward as was thought and hns not completely recovered from the trouble in his shoulders. The Stratford Handicap croutcd much interest and considering that it was really a three-horse race speculation was remarkably brisk. Gold Dawn went to the front immediately and made Lady Quex and Orapai carry their wolter imposts all the way. She held her own. in the straight to win by a good length. Gold Dawn did her work in attractive fashion, but was out by herself all the way and it i 3 problematical how she would have run if anything had gone with her in the middle stages. Under his big weight of 9.5 Orapai ran a great race and went after the leader verv gamely in the Straight, but the weight told and ho was making no impression over the last 50yds. .Nevertheless tho easy manner in which he left Lady Quex at the top of the straight shows he is much improved and is likely to play a prominent part in leading sprint events this season. Lady Quex carried the confidence of her connections and started a hot favourite but tho hot pace found her out aud she was beaten at the straight ontrance. However, the race will do her a lot of good. Gibraltar Hakes Amends. Gibraltar mado i- ends for previous disappointments by winning tho Opunake Scurry in easy style. Gray jumped him out from the barrier well and he was in third position after covering two furlongs. He went to tho front soon afterwards and from then on the issue was never in doubt. Ho is no boy's horse, but with a capable horseman up will be dangerous in seven and eight furlongs hack races from now on. "Forceful, who carried the name colours as Seatown. went a good race. He was in front when the field settled down and hung on w.ell to take second money 1 The race should do him good and he should pay his way in hack company this seafM. The Nigger Minstrel three-year-old Corner-' man \Vas very unlucky and should have been Second. He. was pocketed on tho rails most of the way and had to corae on the outside in tho straight. Ho finished very well and in another stride would have beaten Forceful. Ho ia a nice mover and should not be long in winning. The Wanganui Guineas candidate Psychologist had every chance but was not good enough. The favourite Tavora lost her chance at the start but her stablemate, the Top Gallant filly Barbacan, ran. a great race while her condition lasted.' Royal Finance played with the opposition, in the Waihi Hack. She was fifth in the straight and then B. H. Morris brought her along and soon put the issue beyond doubt. Boyal Finance is very fit at present md with a light weight might win a middle <u<i» tance event. Peter Jackson, ridden by an apprentice, was neglected in the betting in the final, event and was never prominent in the running. He looked in need of the race. Winnagan was in a class by himself among the hunters and, although ho was inclined to run down one or two of his fences, he looks like proving decidedly useful in this class, as he undoubtedly possesses a great deal more pace than the averago hunter.
