NEW PROFESSORS.
UNIVERSITY PROBLEM. DISCUSSION IN AUSTRALIA. Serious consideration was given at an" 1 informal conference of representatives of Australian universities lately to the problem of attracting scholars of the highest qualifications to Australian professorships. The universities represented were Adelaide, Sydney, Queensland and Melbourne. The representatives took the view that the professors had three functions —to teach, to acquire new knowledge by research and to represent their subjects in the community. Finding that they are unable to obtain men with qualifications equal to those of the former professors, some universities are refraining from making new appointments. If this continues, it will mean a 6erious loss, both to the universities and to the community. The conference therefore decided that it would be better to reduce the number of senior members of the stags rather than to reduce the salaries. • / Salaries paid to professors in English gj and Scottish universities are from 25 tc 50 per cent, more than salaries paid to. thi occupants of similar chairs in Australia.
