MILLINER'S LOST HAT. WOMEN DENY THEFT CHARGE. Two young women, Mavis Baker, aged 20, waitress (Mr Noble), and Phyllis MeCallinn, aged 21, domestic (Mr. Singer), appeared in the Police Court on Saturday, each charged with the theft of a hat valued at C2 9s 6d from a cdy store Both accused denied the charge. Aldena May McDowell, milliner, said the two women called at her shop on Wednesday Baker wished to buy a hat, and chose one, which required altera tions, saying she would call for it later. She did not return, and later witness missed another hat. Detective Slater said he had interviewed both accused separately, and each had denied taking the hat. " 1 will deal with both of you if you are not out of town by Monday," said the magistrate, Mr. F. li. Hunt, S.M.
Both accused were convicted, and ordered to come up for sentenco if called upon within six months.
" This man went into the City Mission and started a quarrel," said Detective Sergeant Kelly, when Joseph Daley, aged 34, labourer, was charged with being disorderly while drunk in Ilobson Street on Friday. Accused, who admitted the offence, was fined £l, in default three days' imprisonment.
