DETROIT UNEMPLOYED.
LARGE GIFT FOR RELIEF. CITY'S FINANCES STRAINED. (Received August 23, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. August 22. Mr. James Couzens, a Republican member of the Senate for Michigan, who was formerly Mr. Henry Ford's partner, to-day offered £200.000 for tho relief of the unemployed in Detroit in the coming winter. Mr. Couzens informed the Mayor that ho had unsuccessfully tried to secure a special session of Congress to deal with the question nationally, but, he said, "it is more important to me that the unemployed be properly cared for than to have my views adopted. Mr. Couzens asked thai, £1,800,000 more be raised for the same purposes. Detroit's finances are badly deranged as the result of monthly outlays of £300,000 on welfare relief in the past year.
