The inter-college Rugby tournament opej*ed here to-day, Wellington College defeating Nelson College by 9 points to 15. and Christ's College and Wanganui Colleghite School drawing with C points each. The ground and weather were splendid, but the standard of Rugby was not what was expected from school learns. Wellington was a much heavier flido than Nelson. Although no tries were scored in this match, the winning team owed it? vietory to tho weight of its van and ability to profit after quick smothering of the Nelson backs. Nelson did most of the attackiug; by reason of the fact that the hooke is got the ball from the set serums, but tho batiks lacked resource. The one exception was Karsten, second five-eighths. O'Loughlin kicked three penalty goals for Wellington, one in the first suell and the other two in the second. Stace kicked a penally goal for Nelson. The score at half-time was 3 —o in favour of Wellington. Although tho match ended in a draw. Christ's College should have beaten Wanganui Collegiate School. The Christchurch team did moat of the attacking, but although the defence weakened in places, it could not succeed. Mistakes made at critical moments were the team's undoing. The Wanganui lino was crossed, but a previous infringement robbed Christ's College of another try.
