CHIEF OFFICER'S ILLNESS.
STEAMER DIVERTED TO PORT. PATIENT'S CONDITION SERIOUS. [ISX TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday. The sudden illness of the chief officer, Mr. Gerald Sharpe, of the Westporfc Coal Company's steamer Canopus, while the vessel was en route from Auckland to Westport, was notified to the company by wireless, and the vessel was immediately diverted to New Plymouth. Mr. Sharpe was hurried to hospital on the arrival of the steamer at 6.45 last evening, and an operation was performed. His condition to-night was reported to be serious.
