ASCENT OF RUAPEHU.
ALPINE SPORTS CLIMBERS. DIFFICULTIES OVERCOME. TWO WOMEN IN PARTY. [FROM OUR OWN correspondent.] CHATEAU TONGARIRO, Friday. Ideal weather continues to be enjoyed by the Alpine Sports Club winter sports party at the Chateau Torigariro, most of whom spent yesterday in ski-ing. Good progress is now being made by the less experienced members. A party of 11 .to-day made an excursion to the Crater Lake on foot, steps having been prepared by a climbing party yesterday. The accent was accomplished in about five hours. Aflei" reaching Crater Lake, from which steam was issuing, the party roped themselves together for the ascent of the main Ruapchu peak. This climb involved considerable stepcutting owing to the presence of sastrugi —wind-blown ice in the form of large " mushrooms." After a short spell at the summit, the return journey was made under more favourable conditions. Exceptionally good visibility made the trip particularly interesting The party included two women members. The remainder of the holiday will be occupied in further skiing.
