ORIGIN OF A WORD.
Mr. C. T. Onions, editor of the supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary, has been seeking evidence of the use ol the word " gadget. " before 1907. He has established that some time in the 1890's " steam gadget " was a name for small floats or barges fitted with steam winches, says the Daily MaiL Mr. Onions said that many words which bad come into' use since the last issue of the dictionary, which was published in sections between 1384 and 1328. had to be investigated. A famous example *as " appendicitis." Other new words were ** barracking," " wireless," " psychoanalysis " and ** googly,"
