Mrs. Maurice Chambers, of Havelock North, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Gordon Vosper, of Cambridge, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at Hotel Cat-gen. ]Mrs. Boardman, of Auckland, and her daughter, Mrs. H. 11. Ilnszard, are visiting Napier. Mrs. G. Thomson, of Epsom, left this week for a motor trip to New Plymouth and Wellington. Mrs. W. J. Wratfc has returned to Fendalton, Christchurch, from an extended visit to Auckland. Miss T. Reid and Miss S. Johnston, of Remuera, are spending a holiday at The Chatoau, Tongariro. Miss Hinemoa Ross, of Wellington, is visiting her aunt. Mrs. Duncan Ross, of Ascot Avenue, Remuera. Mrs. E. A. Woodall, of Wellington, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H Kent, of Fairfax Road, Epsom. Mrs. P. Mclutyre and tho Misses T. and I. Mclntyre, of Mangaonoho, have left on a motor trip to Auckland. Dr. K. M. Curtis, of Nelson, Mrs. F. C. Ferry, of New Plymouth, and Miss K. McKibben of Wellington, are at tho Hotel Stonetrurst. Mrs. Albert Upton and Miss Ethel Upton, of Vercoe Road, Hamilton, and Miss Molly Stevenson, of Remuera, are visiting Waimai. Miss A. Willis arrived in Palmerston North from Auckland this week to take over tho duties of secretary of the Palmerston North Y.W.C.A. during tho absence of Miss C. Ashton. Miss Edwyna Roussel, of Belmont Road, Mount Albert, who is at present abroad, will be manned early next month to Mr. Geoffrey Hunter. After the wedding, which will take place in London, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter will travel in the East. The monthly meeting of the Otahnhu W T omen's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist School room on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Eccorsall presided. Mrs. Handersido and Mrs. Burman were appointed delegates for tho forthcoming convention to be held next month. At the Whangarei Primary School vesterday, Miss S. Cowdell, assistant teacher, was the recipient of two presentations on the occasion of her approaching marriage. The headmaster, Mr. C. F. Collins, on' behalf of the teaching staff, asked Miss Cowdell to accept a lady's travelling companion. and the school children presented her with a handsome travelling rug.' The Women's Progress Club (Inc.) held its weekly meeting on Thursday afternoon at the Higher Thought Templo, Wellington Street. A very address on " Three Mothers" was given by Mrs. E. Lewin, who urged all present to be honest in their dealings with children and without domination, to always treat them as having individualities of their own which should be respected. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and afternoon tea was later dispensed. The Bfilmont-Bayswater League oi Mothers held its annual meeting this week. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Presideufc, Mrs. Schulz; secretary, Mrs. Trenwith; librarian, Mrs. Eckersley; committee, Mesdames May, Phillips, Corlettj Reynolds, Drew, Bramley, Robinson, Cahill, Kitchingman, Ogilvy and Cutler. During the afternoon Mrs. "Young contributed two songs and a competition was won by Mrs. Lewis. Afternoon tea was served. Tho Onehunga branch of the League of Mothers held a "thrift" afternoon on Thursday, at which Mrs. Carr-Smitli demonstrated to the ladies tho many articles that can bo made out of clothes that have passed their initial stage of usefulness. Keen interest was shown and at the closo of the demonstration members were able to handle articles and ask further particulars in regard to their making, etc. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Carr-Smith. Mrs. Sibbon sang two songs during the afternoon. The monthly meeting of tho Women's Reform Branch was held in the Southern Cross Buildings this week. Dr. Buckley Turkington presided over a good attendance. During the evening several members addressed tho meeting on important political questions of tho day. Mr. Edwards gavo a brief outline of the constitution of the Reform Party and the method of selecting candidates. Reference was made to the request from Grey Lynn to Dr. Buckley Turkington that she should stand for selection as a candidate and to the fact that she had declined. A general meeting of the Waitemata Women's Progressive League was held at the residence of Mrs. Pratt, of Takapuna, on Wednesday afternoon. It was decided to accept the offer of Mr. Scott, proprietor of the Gaiety Theati'e, to hold a picture entertainment and a dance in the hall shortly. Fixed dales were decided upon for a clothes' drive and a " bring-and-buy" sale. Tea was served at tho conclusion of the meeting. All the funds obtained from the entertainments are in aid of the poor and needy of the district. The annual bachelors' ball, which was held in the Pukemiro Hall recently, was a great success, there being an attendance of about 300 dancers. Iho interior of the hall had been gaily decorated for the occasion, and the music was supplied by Peden's Band from Iluntly. Extras were played by Messrs. J. Pears and P. Hunter. The novelty dances were won by Mr. and Mrs. T. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. F. Rose, Mrs. Bloxham and Mr. Funnell. Very complete arrangements had been made by the committee, and in every way the ball was most enjoyable. The Trelawney Dance Club (under tho auspices of tho Auckland Cornish Association) held the tenth of its fortnightly dances in the Orient Tea Rooms, Newmarket, on Tuesday. Miss W. Gimblett acted as hostess and was assisted by Mr. F. Hellaby. Tho chaperones were Mesdames Butler, Gimblet and Poolev. During tho evening Mr. W. A. Garrett gavo a particularly fine rendering of Schubert's "The Erl King" and was persuaded to sing "The Airman" as a recall number. The South Sea Orchestra gave some very popular jazz items. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Warren and Mr. Macdonald. A "break-up" social afternoon was given to parents and children of the Otahuhu Free Kindergarten by the teachers and leaders on Thursday. There was a large attendance of parents and friends. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors and games were organised for the children. A programme of musical and vocal items was rendered and novelty competitions for tho parents. Recitations were given by Miss Winnie Robertson, dances by Miss Mary College, solos by Mrs. Simpson aud Mrs. Blackburn, and items by two of the scholars, Sylvia Johnston and Dorothy Robertson. "The competitions were won by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Ross. Miss Robertson, director _of the school, intimated that negotiations were in hand and it was hoped these would result in the kindergarten finding a new, and very suitable, home in a large private house in Princes Street, which had been vacant for some time. It was hoped that the school would commence there after the winter vacation.

A very successful ball, organised by Mrs S. W. Has aud Miss Taylor, in aid of the poor and needy, took place in tlie Waitorimu Hall recently. Music was supplied by Peden's Orchestra from Huntiy and was much enjoyed. During 111 ft evening Mr. Meadows gave a pianoforte item. In connection with tho ball a queeii carnival was held, the queens being Miss Colo (Waerenga), Miss P. Taylor (Wai terimu), and Miss Turner (Matahuru)The filial count placed Miss Cole as queen of queens. It, is expected that a sum of £23 will be handed over to the fund. The ladies' committee comprised Mesdames East, McGovern, Hawkon and It. Grundy. A concert and dance in aid of tho Hospital Comforts Club, Whangarei, was held at Wbareora, and was largely attended. Several visitors were present from Whangarei, including those assisting at. the concert. The result is that a sum of £8 4s will be forwarded to tho Comforts Club. Tho following items were contributed: —Pianoforte duet; Madame Rolfe-Smith and Mrs. Woolley; solo, Mrs. Thorne; duet, Mesdames Brainsby and Dobson; recitation, Mrs. Griffin; dance, the Sommerville Sisters; Violin solo, Madame Bolfe-Smith. During the evening Mrs. A. D. Jack, president of the club, took the opportunity of thanking the audience for the assistance given and outlined the activities of the club. The Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, who is a member of the Whangarei District Hospital Board, gave an address. The Wbareora ladies supplied supper. The Mothers' Club of the Y.W.C.A. held their eighth annual meeting this week. The report stated that the programme of the club has been varied and interesting, and great interest has been maintained by the majority of members. Ten new ones have been enrolled. Tho different speakers have given inspirational, instructive and interesting addresses on various subjects, which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all. The financial statement was read and received. The following officers were elected :—President, Mrs. Mann (re-elected); first vicepresident, Mrs. Isdwards (re-elected); second vice-president, Mrs. Hawkey; secretary, Mrs. Ilynes (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs. Dickens; assistant-secretary, Mrs. Manson; thrift secretary, Mrs. Hyland (re-elected); committee, Mesdames Clark, Johnstone, Morris, Collier, Baker. Kasper, Judd, Pankhurst, Pan kin, A. Lewis, Sherley, Hoy. At the Mount Edeu Tea Kiosk on Thursday afternoon Mrs. E. H. Potter entertained the members of the Mount Eden branch of the Hospital Auxiliary at an "At Home." After tea had been served Mrs. Potter spoke of the work of tho auxiliary and also introduced Mrs. T. McNab, the new Mayoress, who had consented to become patroness of tine Mount Eden branch. Mrs._ Kidd, president of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, was also a. guest. Mrs. Lockington supplied some pleasant pianoforte music and Miss Melva Basketfc and Mrs. _ Noel Baskett gave a delightful exhibition of ballroom dancing. Mrs. Hooton, on behalf of tho guests, briefly thanked Mrs. Potter for a pleasant afternoon. Those present included :—Mesdames Whitehead, Marks, Macferson, McGregor, Kelly, Lucas, Forrest, Priestly, Devereux, Anderson, Watson, Sheldon, Lange, Newcombe,Carter, Gardiner, Duffus.
