INCENTIVES TO THRIFT.
Sir,—One cannot help but comment on "H.W.'s" contribution re thrift. In addition to his points thero is the Prime Minister's reference to 50 years ago. Were there the amusements and transport facilities then that there are now? Were there, for one thing, Sunday excursion trains to encourage the spending of potential savings ? As for the schools not doing their part, what can teachers do in the way of precept when the home example contradicts all they say ? "In any case school savings banks are. in vogue and in Auckland alone a year's thrift amounted to many hundreds of pounds sterling. B.M.
