SAFETY OF BUILDINGS.
BILL UNDER REVIEW. ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION. After giving evidence before the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Building Construction Bill, the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, and the city solicitor, Mr. J. Stanton, returned from Wellington yesterday. Mr. Tyler stated that after appearing before the committee he and Mr. Stanton were invited to take part in a roundtable conference for further consideration of the provisions of the bill. The conference, which occupied the whole of Thursday afternoon, was attended by representatives of a number of bodies directly and indirectly interested, and much useful work was done. Dr. E. Marsden, director of scientific and industrial research, presided, and those present included representatives of the Select Committee, the Auckland and Wellington City Councils, the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, the Associated Chambers of Commerce, and the Clerks of Works Association. Professor J. E. L. Cull, chairman of the expert committee which recently reported upon measures to minimise damage to buildings by earthquakes, also took part. Mr. Tyler remarked that he and Mr. Stanton were favourably impressed by the way in which the committee had approached its task.
