BIG HOARD OF SHRAPNEL.
RELIC OF CONVICT DAYS. NORFOLK ISLAND DISCOVERY. 1 ' [from our own correspondent. ] NORFOLK ISLAND. August 4. "While clearing scrub on his farm, Mr. C. M. Evans (Uncle Jelly) recently unearthed what was apparently a big hoard of shrapnel, gecretly prepared long years ago by the convicts in readiness for the day they got possession of the big gun. Some thousands of balls, about the size of a walnut, bad, with infinite patience, been cut with a knife from the soft rock that hardened with exposure. The rusty head of a hoe was on top of the cache and over it had been planted tree ferns. The copvicts used great quantities of powder, in their blasting operations. A successful vegetable garden was worked by them on part of the land now owned by Mr, Evans.
