FARM WORKER'S DEATH. COMMENT BY THE JUDGE. ALREADY HAD A WARNING. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Wednesday. As a Sequel to the death of a young farm worker,. Stewart Humphrey, aged 19, at Patea, oil May 16 last, Norman Tinney, a slaughterman, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour at the Supreme Court to-day, and his motor-driver's licence was cancelled for ten years. Accused had pleaded guilty to charges of recklessly and negligently driving so as to cause death. It was revealed that Tinney previously had been convicted of driving a car while intoxicated, and at the time of Humphrey's death he was a prohibited driver. In sentencing accused Mr. Justice Blair said there was a marked difference between a person driving without a licence and driving when disqualified. Tinney already had had a warning and at the time of the accident was under the influence of liquor. On the charge of negligent driving accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon at any time during the period of his disqualification.
