AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. PROSPECTS OF CONTESTANTS. % Good entries have been received for the second Auckland Provincial badminton tournament, which commences at Scots Jlali to-day, and will be continued until Saturday. In the men's singles G. Martin, tho holder, is in the top half of the draw, which includes C. Ellctt J Southern, E. W. Griffiths, and I. Ellett.' The last-named and Southon are likely to contest the third round, and the winner of this match should face Martin in the semifinal. I'.. J. Itusliworth, the Dominion title-holder, should meet Martin in the final. G. 11. Philson many extend him in tho second round, and D. G. Macfarlane is quite capable of a stern resistance should they meet in the third round; .If brilliant shots alone could win tho title, then Miss A. Ellett would probably take the title Iroin Miss Newton as lady champion. Her bid for the title is sur'o to command attention. Miss Ramsay's chances are probably the brightest. She is a i vastly improved player and her match temperament is probably sounder than that of any other competitor.' She will meet Miss P. Miller in the first round, and' a good match should result. Miss Ramsay should meet Miss Ellctt in the semi-final. Miss Newton, the holder, is in the top half of the draw, and should meet the winner of the match between Mbs Marjorio Macfarlane and Miss Mona Waters. Miss Newton has no apparent weakness in her game, unless it bo her court covering, but she appears to be flblo to counteract this with clever anticipation. Miss Mona Waters has been playing well in practice, and her claim cannot be overlooked. Tonks and Macfarlane may succeed in warding off challenges for tho doubles title, which they won last year, but they will be faced with a strong challenge by Martin and Rishworth, who should meet i hem in the semi-final. Southon and Griffiths and McLean and Jacob should meet in the lower half. In the combined doubles it will be interesting to see whether Rishworth and Miss Ramsay can succeed in Auckland , as they did at the last New Zealand meet- ' i?." Wanganui. I. Ellett and Miss K. (Waters are holders of the Auckland title, they will be a difficult pair to beat. .These two pairs should meet in the top and Southon and Miss A. Ellett and * Wss -Pu Miller in the lower _ - . , j
