AUSTRALIAN ORANGES.
SHIPMENT AT VANCOUVER. NO DUTY IMPOSED.
(Received July 19, 5.5 p.m.) VANCOUVER, July 18
Heralded by extensive radio and newspaper advertising, 50,000 boxes of Australian oranges arrived yesterday, when the merchants, who had made preparations for a heavy week-end sale, found they could not bo admitted except under a heavy duty, as, pending word from Canberra, tho treaty with Australia was not yet in effect. The Minister of Commerce, Mr. H. 11. Stevens, was appealed to, and it is understood that he sent a cablegram to Australia.
A message received later from Ottawa ordered the oranges to be admitted free of duty. Mr. L. Tl. McGregor, Australian Trade Commissioner, wired from Toronto stating that the Prime Minister, Mr. R. 13. Bennett, had promised free entry before the shipment left Australia, in the event of the treaty not being in force when the Niagara arrived.
