NOTES ON THE RACING.

LANDMARK, SCORES AGAIN.

THE JULY STEEPLECHASE.

SURPRISE BY DARK PRINCE.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —RACING REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Saturday.'

Landmark scored another meritorious win in the Talavera Hurdles. Callapat made all the pacei and in the early stages was attended by Unoco, Pat's Boy and Royal Mint. Landmark moved up at the home turn and, after jumping the last fence with Callapat, drew away to beat him comfortably. Callamnrt ran into third place, 10 lengths away, and then came Unoco, Royal Mint and Pat's Boy. Landmark could scarcely have won more -convincingly and his form suggests good possibilities. Zeebrugge justified his favouritism in the Novice Handicap by winning' all the way, although at, the finish Gold Pit ran him to head. Zeebrugge should make a good three-year-old and may have Derby possibilities. Gold Pit was not well placed early and finished in good style. Actaeon, also, was not - prominent early and came on well, Gibraltar was a fair fourth and should improve with racing. The Sun's Improved Form.

The Sun'.s change of. riders resulted in him giving an entirely different exhibition, compared with his previous efforts, H. Gray taking kim ~to the front before turning for home and winning nicely from Wild Country. The Sun has always been partial to heavy going, but his riders have had difficulty in managing • him. Gray took a firm hand with him and soon had the race in safe keeping. Wild Country ran another solid race and her two seconds and one third at the meeting are proof of her consistency. Water Power did not finish as well as expected, but, seeing that this was her fourth start at, the meeting and that she carried a good weight, her third was creditable. Adventus, who finished fourth, did fairly well and may improve. A great reception was given to the 12-year-old Nukumai when he won the Winter Hurdles for the third time. Some of veteran's greatest triumphs have been recorded on the Trentham course, including this raco in 1925, and "again in 1928. He was thoroughly at home in the conditions, and, jumping well, and always being within striking distance, he took the lead half-a-mile from home and won'very easily. Prince Lu, as usual, was soon in front. Tunbridge going with him in the early part, while at tho hurdle out of the straight Singleton joined him, Membo, Tunbridge and Nukumai following. It was at the second to last fence that Nukumai took charge from Membo ,and High Pitch and in that order they finished with large spaces between them. Then came Full Mark and Tunbridge. Caxinthia disappointed, being a long way in -the rear throughout, Nukumai was far too good for the others in the mud. Membo was always prominent and fully deserved his second.' High Pitch looked likely when he went into third place, but thos* in front were too good for him. Full Mark gave a very fair display, while Singleton, after going up to Prince Lu in tho lead, could, not go on with it. Winner Finishes Strongly*

Red Boa, ridden by B. H. Morris instead of N. C. Trillo, won -the Winter Oats Handicap in decisive style from iown Major. Epaialt.cs. wua first away and then Koyal Game went, to the lead. At the entrance to the straight Town Major and Red Boa were iii charge. Ked Boa, on the rails, finished strongly to beat Town At a-j or com-or labiy at. theend. \viiu6 j-.paialtes, who came ou well aftei.* ciroppiu» back from, tho, iead„, was . third. . Dark prince. jumped well and once he was allowed to" run through he showed too "much paca for the others, ihere was a gap in the lasi,.fence and. this meant that for the last three lurlonga it was simply a. flat race, with the winner so far in front that there was no chance of catching him. Omeo and Copcy had a good tussle for second, Omeo holding on to get the decision by half-a length. Omeo » performance was very good, for he had not had a race since May and lost a lot of ground through stumbling after landing in the first round. Copey. made up a good deal of leeway and plodded on gamely. Paris was well beaten, being made too much uee of. His rider at first attempted the same tactics an in the Wellington Steeplechase, but Spalpiko and St. Warngal kept Paris up to it and ho was beaten a long way from home. Pangolin did well to finish fourth, after being prominent throughout. Win lor Manawhenua. Manawhenua showed his first day's form to be wrong, by winning the Onslow Handicap in characteristic style. Assemble, Fitzquex and Manawhenuj. were the early leaders, but Ivnollnnere was first into the straight. Manawhenua then came through to win nicely from Knoll.mere, whilo Koyal Finance made a late dash to cut Inevitable out of third place. Trojan Melody made almost a one-horse race of the Kia Ora Handicap, coming away in the straight to win by ..four lengths from False Scent. Water Power, making her fifth appearance at tlie. meeting, ran . another solid race. Winsome Hind, who was taken out wide, was fourth, with Grand Acrq and Normandy next to finish.* :
