CONTESTS IN COUNTRY.

OPOTIKI BEATS WHAKATANE. HUNT'S INDIVIDUAL RECORD. Rugby competitions were continued in the various country centres on Saturday. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the llrrat.o: — Hamilton.^— I There were no senior club fixtures at Hamilton on Saturday owing to the absence of players in the Hamilton and Waikato representative teams. In a junior Kaine. Old Boys beat Technical Old Boy* fjy 12 points to G. Cambridge.-—Playing nt Victoria Square in showery weather, Matamata defeated Cambridge- by G points to 0 in the first of the eastern sectional games, for the Finlay Cup. In a closely-contested game, which was not productive of a high standard of football, Koonan and "Fallon scored tries for the winners. A third-grade curtain-raiser resulted in Waipft defeating Cambridge by 3 points, a try, to 0.

Te Aroha.r—ln a- conclusive game with Waihi, Te Arolia gained a signal victory in the Poland Cup competition for Thames Valley supremacy. The match was witnessed by 500 spectators, who were most enthusiastic in their encouragement., The scorers for To Arolia were Rackham (2), Roacli, Finlayson and Pilkington. Rackham also kicked a penalty goal. The curtain-raiser contest between representative teams from the Te Aroha and Morrinsville school districts was won by the latter. 8 points to 3.

Paeroa.—The first round of tho Poland Memorial Cup competition was played at Paeroa to-day between the Paeroa and Hauraki Plains representatives. The game was evenly contested, and resulted in a win for the home team by 6 points to 3. In the first 10 minutes Paeroa.. scored, and the Plains quickly evened. Just before half-time Paeroa scored another try, and the halftime score; was 6 to 3 in Paeroa's favour. The eecond spell was strenuously contested, but no further score was recorded. Hikurangi.—Hikurangi senior team had ft bye and travelled to play Bay of Islands, where, after a close game, the latter won by 13 points to 12. Whangarei.—The third and last round of the senior competition waTa commenced today. At the end of the second round,- Old Boys .led Maungakaramea by one point. Today's results do not affect the position, as both teams secured wins. There was a good attendance at Rugby Park, the weather conditions being excellent. Maungakaramea, 11, beat City, 0. tries being scored by, Litt and Morrisey (2), Morrisey converting one of his tries. Finlayson, the All Black, made his first appearance this «eason, playing for City. Old Tries were scored by Hosking. H. Syme and I Syme (3). Junior grade: Old Boys, 14, Horahora, 3; Whananaki, 11. Portland, G: Waiotira, 3, Mangakahia, 0; 'High School, 13, Whakaparn, 12. Third grade: Old Boys. 13, High School A, 3; Horahora, 9, High School B, 3.

Tauranga.—The Tauranga Rugby football representative team played a match against a fifteen chosen from the remaining players ■in the union's district, and . won by 6 pomte to 3. Junior grade: Athletics,' 29, Cadets, 0; Huimai, 3, Te Puhi, 0. Morrinsville.—The Finlay Cup match between Morrinsville and Putaruru was a wellcontested game ending in a draw, 3 all. Third grade: Morrinsville, 16, le Aroha, 8.

To Puke.—The Hamilton representative Rugby team visited Te Puke and after a bright and interesting game, defeated the home team by 28 poirtte to 15. Mr. C. Montgomery was referee.

Rotorua. —Senior grade: Kahukura, 9, Waikite, 8; Waiariki, 20, Whakarewaiewa. 0. Junior grade: Kaharoa, 6, 3- High School, 0. Kahukura, 0; Matamata F'iret, 12, High School Second, 8: Matamata Junior High School, 17, Kotorua Junior High School, 0.

Opotiki.—The. Opotiki and Whakatane senior representatives met here to-day, fine weather prevailing. Opotiki played a new team, trying out young players who justified their selection by winning easily. The first half was fairly even, the only score going to Whakatane, a try being ecored. In the second half, Opotiki had much the better of the play, and ecored Wo tries, Morton and Wolfenden securing one each. Hunt converted both and also kicked tui ee penalty goals, thus scoring 13 out of the. 19 points. This brought his score in four representatives matches to 37 out of a total of 43 obtained by Opotiki.

Pukekohe, —Senior grade: Ramblers won the championship, defeating Patumahoo, in •the deciding match, by 9 points to 3. • At half-time, Ramblers were leading, 6 to 0. this score representing two tries by K. Cossey, and a loose rush by Ramblers soon after the resumption of play ended m Sproul scoring at the earner. Patumahoo worked play to its opponents' goal-line, secured possession from 'the ruck, and, passing snnr>pily, scored by the posts, Pilkington crossing. The kick at goal, however, fell short. Patumahoo again reached the line, where Robinson secured in a line-out and dived across. The game finished amid great excitement with the score: Ramblers, 9; Patum'ahoe. 6. Mr. H. Pleydell refereed. Cur-tain-raisers resulted: Pukekohe technical High School. 11. Auckland Grammar second fifteen, 5; Auckland Grammar fourth fifteen, 14, Pukekohe Technical High School second fifteen, 0.

Franklin.—Senior grade: Onewhero, G. Tuakau, 0: Kohanga, 18, Bombay, 0; Pukekawa, 11, Pokeno, 10. Onewhero wins the championship, with Tuakau and Ivohanga equal, as runners-up. Junior grade: bt. Stephen's won the championship, with Bombay runners-up. Third grade: Bombay, 8. St. Stephen's 8,*3; Tuakau, 10 Pokeno, 0. St Stephen's B has won the championship with Tuakau runners-up. Waipa.—The first representative matches at Te Awamutu this season were played today, when Waipa seniors defeated Kaglan in the first round for the Finlay Cup, by 25 points to 0. Kaglan did well up to halttime, but thereafter Waipa was superior in all departments. The Waipa i l ' nl °r •representatives also scored a win against Otorohanga, by 9 points to 8, after an indifferent exhibition Waipa was very lucky to win, as the visitors had all the better of the game . An eliminating round for the ieddy Shield, between High School teams from Cambridge and Te Awamutu was played, and the Cambridge boys won by 9 points to 3. Cambridge is now to meet Te Kuiti in the final, Te Kuiti having defeated Otorohanga.
