TRAMPER DIES IN SNOW.

EXHAUSTION AND EXPOSURE, BRAVE EFFORTS OF COMPANION. [P,\- TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A verdict that death was due to exhaustion and exposure was returned at the inquest on Mr. Richard William Olliver, who died in the snow in the Arthur's Pass region early on Sunday morning. The inquest was held before Mr. M. Fitzgerald, of Otira, the acting-coroner. The dead man's comrade, Mr. I. W. Tucker, was highly commended by the coroner. A witness, who had brought in tho body, also paid a tribute to the fine effort of Mr. Tucker in carrying Mr. Olliver for half a mile until he became exhausted. $ "Mr. Tucker did good work," declared Mr. Fitzgerald, "and nearly lost his own life in trying to save his comrade." The two men were tramping through heavy snow from the Bealey Hotel to the Curringtou Memorial hut. They left Christehureh on Saturday afternoon for the Bealey Hotel, 60 miles from Christchurch, on the main West Coast Road. Jn the evening they left for Carrington hut under the mountains at the headwaters of the Bealey River, but, Mr. Olliver died when about four miles hum the hut.
