EXAMINATION AWARDS.
MUSIC AND ELOCUTION
The competitors who were awarded the highest marks in the recent practical examinations in music and elocution, held under the auspices of the Trinity College of Music, "London, were presented with commemorative medals at a gathering held m (ho Lewis Eady Hall yesterday afternoon. In announcing the names of successful students the examiner, Dr. D. Vaughan Thomas, said the standard, although good, was not quite up to that of at least one other part of New Zealand. He considered Auckland was capable of better results owing to its population and capnblo teachers. Special mention was made of the work of Mr. J. It. Ferguson, who received 86 marks in the elocution licentiate (est. "He is an excellent reciter and an actor, too," said the examiner. The medals, which wore donated by Mr. A. L. Stedman, Auckland secretary of Trinity College, were presented by Mrs. Stedman. In cases where more than one competitor obtained top marks, the award was given to the youngest of the successful candidates. Results are as follows, teachers' names being given in parentheses :
INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL. Licentiate.—Joan Freda Hankin (Mr. Eric Waters), 71 marks. Associate.—Leonora Owsley (St. Benedict's Convent), 78. . .... Higher'Local.—Patrick Towsey (St. Benedict's Convent), 80. Senior.—Barry Billon (St. Joseph's Convent, Eenntera), 87. Intermediate.—Dorothy Franchi (St. Joseph's Convent, Mount Eden). 92.
Junior.—Betty Sheath (St. Mary's Convent,, Ponsonby), 92. Preparatory.—Agnes Nielson (St. Benedict's Convent), 92. First Steps.—Edna Catherine Nielson (St. Benedict's Convent). 88. Alice Arbon (St. Joseph's Convent. "Mount Eden), and Miri Ball (St.. Joseph's Convent, Remuera). received an equal number of marks. ELOCUTION. Licentiate. —James Roy Ferguson (Mr. J. AV. Bailey). 86. Junior.—June Grevatt (St. Mary's Convent, Ponsonby), 77. Barbara Kosraxi Kerr (Mr. W. Runsell-Wood). Colleen King (St.. Mary's Convent, Ponsonby), and Gladys M. Spencer (Miss J. lloukl), received an equal number of marks. Preparatory.—Betty Birch (Mrs. B. Mayall), 85".
