FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

MEETINGS OF ORDERS. MANY SOCIAL GATHERINGS. The Star of Newmarket Lodge, TJ.A.O.D., met. on Wednesday, the archdruid, Bro. Bush, presiding over a good gathering of members. In the absence of Bro. Wade, the treasurer's chair was occupied by PD.P. Bro. J. Potter. The office of A.D.8., having been declared vacant, Bro. Ormerod was elected and installed, the D.P., Bro. Blakemoro, officiating. It was reported that a visit had beon paid the previous evening to Auckland Lodge No. 2, for the purpose of playing a series of bowling matches for the Newburn Memorial Shield. Although winning two games out of three, the Newmarket visitors lost on the aggregate number of points by 6. An invitation from the Transport Club for a visit "to the Epsom club robms was conveyed by the D.P. and accepted. Congratulations were offered to P.D.P. Bro. Potter on his success in winning the champion singles bowling contest. At the conclusion of the business the lodge went into harmony and items were well rendered by Bros. McKee, Smart, Page, Ormerod, Hampton, Potter, Mackay, T. Wilson, Lowry and Andrew.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mizpah Rebekah Lodge, No. 18, 1.0.0. F., was held last week, a very good attendance being recorded. The N.G., Sister Phyllis Gear, presided. After the meeting closed, the N.G. welcomed the brothers of Wynyard Lodge, No. 57, to a social evening arranged by Sister Howes, P.N.G., and her social committee. During the evening indoor bowls, cards and dancing were indulged in, while vocal itoms by Mr. Bickerton and Bro. A. Gear were much appreciated. The dance music supplied by Sister Leece was excellent, as was the extra by Mr. Purcell. An excellent supper was enjoyed and the noble grand of Wynyard returned thanks for the entertaining evening.

Court Te Puke, A.0.F., held its annual social and dance last week. The attendance was excellent and every part of the district appeared to bo represented. A feature of the eveuing was the number of old-time waltzes, which gave much pleasure. Shalfoon's Orchestra provided the dance music. The M.C. for the evening was Mr. Murray Stewart, while the arrangements were in the capable hands of Bro. R. Mollgard. The hall and supper room had been ga;ly decorated and the sumptuous repast served by the social committee was much appreciated.

The Ponsonby branch of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows continues to make good progress under the guidance of its popular N.G., Bro. J. Smith, whose work has been recognised by his reelection for a further term of office. At the last meeting, held on Tuesday evening, the newly-elected officers were installed by the grand director, Bro. J. Prescott, assisted by Bro. C. Robinson as conductor. The occupants of the chairs for the current term are as follows:N.G., Bro. J. Smith (re-elected); V.G., Bro. Soufflot; financial secretary, Bro. Bai (re-elected); treasurer, Bro. T. O'Donohue; recording secretary, Bro. McKernau: R.S.N.G., Bro. Patrick; Xj.S. N.G., Bro. Hair; R.S.V.G., Bro. Conway; L.S.V.G., Bro. Robinson; warden, Bro. Taylor (re-elected); 1.G., Bro. Bailey; 0.G., Bro. C. Hogan.

The regular monthly meeting of the Waitemata Encampment No. 5, 1.0.0. F., was held on Wednesday. Ihis being the ninth anniversary of the institution of the encampment, the necessary formal business was quickly transacted, so that members could suitably celebrate the occasion. A very welcome visitor to the meeting was P.C.P. Bro. A. H. Valentine, of Dunedin, who conveyed greetings from Dunedin Encampment No. 1 and Port Nicholson Encampment No. 6. The chief patriarch reported on a very pleasant visit paid by nine members to Wynyard Lodge No. 57, and invited the brethren to visit Aroatca Lodge with him on July 21. A further invitation was received from Franklin Encampment No. 7 to attend its meeting on July 22. _ After the meeting, the members and their lady friends spent a happy time at bowls. Four rinks were kept busy and keen interest shown in all the games. A most enjoyable supper was partaken of, at which the C.P., Bro. J. M. Barker, expressed th'e pleasure of the encampment at seeing so many visitors present. P.C.P. Bro. Valentine was then asked to present a trophy to the winning bowling team of the evening, the successful ones being Pat. W. L. Harding (skip), Mrs. J. M. Barker, Pat. Brewster and Pat. Coop.

Court Pride of Papatoetoe, A.0.F., held another of its popular social evenings last week in the Renown Hall, when a large number of members and friends gathered. Old-timo dancing occupied the time in a most pleasing manner, music being supplied by Miss Colling and extras by Miss Parker. Supper served by tho social committee helped toward the success of the evening.

The Loyal Calliopo Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., celebrated its 19th anniversary with a social and dance in tho Foresters' Hall, Devonport. A large and representative gathering of friendly society members was present, including P.G. Bro. Goldwater, of Loyal Good Intent Lodge. During th<2 evening the presentation was made of a past grand's collar and framed diploma to Sister F. N. Gillespie, who had the honour of being tho first lady member to pass through tho chairs of the lodge. In making the presentation, the secretary, P.G. Bro. Thomson, warmly congratulated the sister upon her achievement. Tho dance music was supplied by the Cavaliers' Orchestra, a most happy time being spent. Tlie ladies' committee, under Mrs. Simpson, served a delightful supper, and the whole evening proved a happy and successful one.
