STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.

WEAKER TONE DEVELOPS

r \ /'./ . Easier conditions prevailed on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday and tho volume of business was very small in comparison with last week's active trading. War Bonds hardened and there was steady inquiry for Inscribed Stocks, Support for local body debentures was weaker, i

There was a»marked setback in the banks group and prices for most lines were written down, while for some support was withdrawn altogether. Tho only dealing in tho section was confined to New Zealahds. Late business on Saturday was recorded at 48s and yesterday a further transaction took place at '47s. Commercials of Australia were asked for at 13s 9d, compared with 14s on Saturday. Insurance held fairly firm, although there, was a weakening in offers for New Zealands.

Improved inquiry was registered for Goldsbrough-Morts. Auckland Gas were .taken unchanged at 23s 3d. Slightly better support was forthcoming for New Zealand Breweries following the announcement of tho dividend payment for the year.

General investments were little changed. Buyers of Australian Glass returned to the market at 23s and British Tobaccos were wanted unchanged at 24s 9d. A rise of 3d to 35s in offers for Wilsons Cement failed to attract any quotation from sellers.

Inquiry over a fairly wide range was sustained fn mining. Leading issues showed little movement. Business was confined to a single sale of Waihis, which was completed late on Saturday at the current price of 15s 6d.
