DEALS IN CATTLE.

FARMER BEFORE THE COURT.

BILL OF SALE S A FACTOR

Two charges of obtaining money by false pretences were preferred against Arthur Milton Campbell, aged 49, farmer (Mr. Allan Moody), in the Police Court yesterday.

Accused admitted that on September 3 last, at Puni, he obtained £SO from Arthur George London by falsely representing that 28 heifers were his property, and also that on October 19, at Puni, he obtained £4 from Henry George Lucas by falsely representing that a bull was his property. Detective-Sergeant Kelly stated that last year accused was farming in the Rotorua district. Although his stock was covered by a bill of sale he moved it to another person's farm and sold the cattle on the representation that the animals were his own. Accused had neverbeen before the Court previously and was said to be a good worker. He was adjudged bankrupt at Hamilton in 1927 and had not yet been discharged.

Counsel submitted that accused was more a muddler than anything else. The trouble was largely due to accused not appreciating the fact that the natural increase in stock covered by a bill of sale, also came within the provisions of the bill. Accused now was working as a sharemilkor for a farmer in the Paeroa district and his employer spoke very well of him. He had pleaded guilty on the advice of counsel and in order to save undue expense. "It is not a case of deliberate stealing and selling of cattle," said Mr. W. J. Campbell, probation officei'. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, admitted Campbell to probation for two years and ordered him to pay £B7 in restitution.
