The match between New Zealand and Yorkshire ended in a draw. The New Zealand batsmen attempted to force the pace in an effort to secure a definite result. Blunt batted brilliantly for two hours, and, while he showed a steady defence, he did not miss a single scoring opportunity on the off. His back and square cutting was outstanding. Vivian and Talbot batted briskly, the last-named hitting two sixes, one a straight drive off Verity out of the ground. Verity used the drying wicket admirably, spinning appreciably and making considerable pace off the pitch.
Lowry declared at three o'clock, leaving Yorkshire under three hours to score 238. Merritb and Matheson bowled well before the tea adjournment, although the wicket had become <sasy.
Weir bowled Holmes with a late in-swinger. Oldroyd and Mitchell were dismissed by catches in the slips. A fine free partnership by Leyland and Barber after tea ended New Zealand's hopes of victory. Leyland was well stumped in the final over of the day. Following are the scores:— YORKSHIRE.—First Innings.
