IMPORTS FROM CANADA.
SHIPMENT BY MONOWAI. FIRST UNDER NEW TARIFF, QUANTITY OF TINNED FOOD. . The first shipment of goods f rom Canada:'- which will be subject to the in. creased tariff rates recently announced by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, arrived by the Monowai at Auckland yesterday. The Monowai left Vancouver after the tariff changes had been brought into operation and thus the exemption extended to vessels on tha water at tho time docs not apply. The Monowai's cargo is composed mainly of British Columbian products, such as tinned food. < -v
Representations on behalf of merchants concerned have been made to the Prijao Minister by the Canadian-British Traders' Association of New Zealand. Importers are anxious to know whether the ship, ment can be cleared without the extra taxation or whether Mr. Forbes will con. cede the right to pay the retaliatory duties under, promise of refund after tha trade agreement has been finalised. Several inquiries as to developments hare been made at the office of the association, but no reply has yet been received from the Prime Minister.
