RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS.
Sir, —The Railway Department has in the past lost much revenue in carrying lime, fertilisers, etc., practically free of charge to the farmers, and no doubt many concessions have been granted to the commercial class, another loss to the department. The writer suggests a return can now be made by expending a fair proportion of the unemployment fund in doing away with some of the most dangerous level crossings, which would be a decided benefit to (ho department' and the road-travelling public. There should not be insuperable difficulties to be overcome, provided the Highways Board, the Railway Department and the Unemployment Board worked amicably together. The general public would also benefit, as important works would be paid for without raising a loan, besides which it would greatly assist to prevent the loss of many valuable lives. W.H.C.
