TARANAKI BEATS SOUTHLAND [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH Saturday The Tnranaki Rugby representatives defeated the touring Southland team by 22 poiata to 15 in a thrilling match played in fine weather with a dry ball. Southland had a strong and dangerous team, but Taranaki kept its opponents in hand with superior back play and combination. First one side and then the other was in the lead, and every try was a good one. Taranaki exploited t.he short punt and quick j follow 'up with success, and the passing 'among the backs was good. Southland was alwavs dangerous in the loose, as it proved in the first minute of the game by, scoring a runaway try Taranaki gave a vastly improved display compared with its match against Wellington. BULLER DEFEATS INANGAHUA. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WESTPOKT. Saturday. The Rugby match between Buller and Inangahua was played on Victoria Square to-day in fine weather. The Te Hurunui Apanui Shield match played at Matata between Rangitaiki (holders) ' and Te Puke (challengers) resulted in a last-minute victory for lo Puke by 12 points to 10. Te Puke was nine and Rangitaiki 10 when To Puke was awarded a free kick from which Dare added three points. Time was called immediately after- " Mr B 'George Peebles was referee.
