KAIPARA RIVER BOARD.
INQUIRY BY COMMISSION, EXTENDED AREA OPPOSED. Tho commission set up to inquire into tho proposed alteration of the boundaries of tho Ivaipara River District, will commence its sitting at Helonsvillo 011 Monday. Tho commission consists of Mr, F. S. Dyson, Auckland district engineer of tho Public Works Department, and Mr. A. W. Sweetman, district valuer of the Valuation Department. A petition of protest again tho proposed extension of the Kaipara River Board's District was sent to the Minister 0? Internal Affairs earlier in tho year. Tho board was constituted about two years ago, with the object of controlling the flow of the river and preventing the flooding of the lower levels. The objectors stated that a number of settlers in the hills had been .brought into (ho board's area against their wishes and that now the board was seeking to extend its area by the inclusion of 169,000 acres, taking the whole of the watershed back to the Waitakero Ranges, The objectors living ori tho watershed say they have 110 interest in tho river.
It is stated that the operations of the board will not mean tho bringing in of new land, but only the improvement of existing farms, ji is contended that tho greater area is being sought, not for tho bonefit of tho affected settlors, but so that their property may be used as security for extended borrowing powers.
