Rain continued practically incessantly up till one o'clock to-day, and fast work was again out of the question at Trentham this morning . Horses had to be content with strong pace work on the sand.' 1 The weather now shows signs of. breaking,, and, the present intentions of the .Wellington Racing Club are that the meeting shall open to-morrow., The forecast is for a decided turn for the better, and -a fine day is predicted. 1 The track, bowev.er, will bo very heavy. There were no further scratchings up .to 1 p.m.- v. ; , ■ > , • DEATHS AT OKAWA STUD. GRANDCOURT AND FIRST BLOW. The death is .reported from Mr. ■T. H. Lowry's Okawa Stud of the imported sire Grandcourt; by Captivation from La Huppe. Grandcourt was. imported from England some years ago, and, although not a great success at the stud, sired a: number of very useful performers, probably the "best of his progeny being Second Wind, who has done most of his rucing in Australia. Mr. Lowry also sustained another loss at his stud recently, when the brood more First Blow, in-foaUto Night Raid, also died. First Blow was by Finlan 1 from War Talk and had produced two pood performers in Second Wind and Gascony.
PROGRESS OF L. J. ELLIS. STILL IN DUNEDIN HOSPITAL. [FROM ■ OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. 'Tho'-latest advice received concerning L. J. Ellis, who had a bad fall from Topere at Wingatui, is that he is doing very woll. but will bo an inmate of tho Dunedin Hospital for another four or five weeks. , His leg lias mended satisfactorily, but he is troubled by affected eyesight, causod_ through the skull being fractured, and it is on this account that ho is being kept in hospital for special treatment.
