RADIUM AND X-RAYS.

'Although radium" rays and X-rays cause reddening oE the skin to the same extent, the radium is about three times more effective in producing deep-seated effects. This conclusion has been reached by two scientists who constructed apparatus to measure equivalent, comparable doses of the two radiations. It was found 500 Roentgen units of radium gamma rays produced the same reddening of the skin as 600 Roentgens of filtered X-rays. Other experiments wero made on wheat seedlings. In both cases the effect of the radiation was shown as a stunting c f the living shoots or cells,' but three times as much X-ray radiation was required to produce an effect comparable to radium. For this reason, it may be desirable to use higher voltages with X-rays for medical purposes.
