A BIRTHDAY CAKE.
DEBUTANTES IN MITTENS. A PICTURESQUE BALL; There is something very refreshing and delightful about Queen Charlotte's birthday ball. It has come to be regarded as the debutantes' own dance, and the presence of 50 of the most notable of the girls who are making their debut in social lifc gives to it, year by year, an atmosphere of freshness and fragrance that is altogether charming, writes a Londoner in a daily journal. Recently, when it w,as held amid the splendours of the Dorchester, Park Lane, W., it was more attractive than it has ever been, and extraordinarily picturesque. Frocks*which touched the floor made all the debutantes look unusually tall and slender. Some of their skirts were so long, indeed, that, as they fox-trotted, they caught a bunch of draperies' gracefully in one hand and lifted it sufficiently high to show dainty ankles, Every girl was in white. Flowers in Their Hair. Here there was a bouffant dress of frothy, showy chiffon; there, a willowy figure -swathed in ivory satin. Crisp tulle frills fashioned several girlish gowns, white with touches of silver was a favourite. Some wore flowers in their hair. Others had bandeaux of crystal and pearls fastened round their heads. And nearly all of them had long white gloves or oldfashioned silk mittens. Lady Patricia Ramsay was the guest of honour. She is a great-great-grand-daughter of Queen Charlotte, and, after dinner, she. cut a huge birthday cake iced with red and white sugar,"its lower tier illuminated with red and white electric candles.
