CHARM OF THE BLACK OPAL.
Most of us know the ordinary opal, but how .many people realise the charms of black opal and 'fire opal? Black opals are a mixture of sapphire blue and green, but fire opals are perfectly clear stones, brilliant orange in hue, which look like drops of liquid fire on finger or neck. Unlike most opals, they are said to be definitely lucky to. their, owners. Next in beauty come Brazilian topazes, which are the colour of golden syrup and glow almost incgiidescenUy at'night. The ordinary quartz topazes are. full of possibilities. They vary in colour from pale straw yellow to the tint of old ale. Particularly engaging are the " smoked topaz " family, which are admirable with town tweeds and all clothes in the brown, beige, and yellow scale.
