£3O FOR A TOMBSTONE.
" WICKED WASTE OF MONEY." i In order to pay for a tombstone over her husband's grave a woman applied to Judge Crawford at the County Court at Southend, England, for the payment of £3O out of compensation awarded her in respect of his death. The Judge asked if she did not think that was a waste of money. She replied: " Certainly not, for my husband." The Judge: Your husband ,may have been the best in the world, but you do not show your respect by squandering money in that way. It may be a credit to your feelings, but it is no credit to your common sense. ' "If there was less nonsense talked about these things it would be a good thing," the Judge added. " There is so much rubbish and sentimental claptrap at present instead of facing hard facts. If you had plenty, of money you could afford to indulge in these feelings, but as you have no money you cannot. I will not allow it."
On hearing that the stone had been erected and the account paid .with money borrowed from the woman's son, the Judge instructed that the money should be paid, adding: "It is a wicked waste."
