RAISING A LAKE.

CHURCH TO BE SUBMERGED.

The construction work under the Manchester Corporation's water scheme at Haweswater, nine miles from Shap, in Westmoreland, and fourteen from Penrith, in Cumberland, includes the raising of this beautiful lake 90ft. The interesting engineering feat will necessitate the submersion of the little ancient parish church at Mardale, the picturesque vicarage, which stands a short distance away in a secluded valley, the old inn—the Dun Bull, so well known to hundreds of tourists—and three fairly large-sized farms, all in Mardale. Mardale Church, which is centuries old, is one of the smallest in the country, and seats only forty persons. The burialground, in which are some gravestones with quaint epitaphs, is to be covered' over with conci-ete before water collects over the spot when a huge dam is completed. The entire population of the parish was only fifty-six at the time of the census taken ten years ago. Burn Banks, the village which has sprung up since the Manchester Corporation began their scheme,- is only a short, distance away.
