WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

WAIKATO GROUP MEETING.

A demonstration of the work that is being carried on by the members of the Women's Institutes in the Waikato was given in the Alexandra Hall, Hamilton, recently. Over 100 members of' Waikato branohes were present, the following districts being representedTo Hoe, Rangiriri, Waerenga, Raglan, Te Uku, To .Awamutu,. Taupiri, Huntly, Waingaro, Te, Kauwhata, Waharoa, Waitoa, Te Aroha, Gordonton, Matangi, Ohinewai, Glen Afton, and Pukemiro. Mrs. J. Hunter, of Waerenga, presided. The meeting was organised by Miss H. Waterhouse, of le Kauwhata, and was an unqualified success. Examples of home arts and crafts of a varied nature were shown. a 11 7 " ■'■ rw ' n > Greenhithe, •Auckland, president of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes, addressed the gathering on methods of conducting the institutes. Ibo banner for the best display was awarded to the Gordopton branch, whoso members had assembled an attractive selection of homework made - from raw and waste material, beaten copper, fancy work and many novelties. To Hoe was given second place. The judges were Mesdames Cornish (Morrinsvilie), Griffiths (Hastings) and Corloy (Waerenga). Gordonton.-—A largely attended meeting was held at the home of Mrs. J. Ballard, where Mrs. Faville, of Hamilton, gave a very interesting and instructive demonstration on cake icing, which was much appreciated. A collection of produce, etc., was made to send to the Welfare League in Hamilton. Several new members were welcomed.

Henderson.—A lesson in stencilling was given by Mrs. Yesey at a meeting of tho Henderson Institute. A parcel of needlework for the hospital auxiliary was distributed by Mrs. Gago Robb to those.members willing to undertake the making up of tho garments. The monthly flower competition was judged by Mrs. Vesey and Mrs. Lowell, and resulted in points being awarded to Mrs. Gage Robb, first; Miss Ellis, second; and Mrs. Eason, third Kumeu.—An interesting address was given on life in Turkey by Mrs. Chessey, who had spent her girlhood in that country. A demonstration of moccasin making was given by Mrs. S. Phillips, of the Woodhill Institute.

Matakana.—Mrs. Grior, of Warkworth, gave an enjoyable address on the life of John Wesley at a recent meeting of the institute. It was decided to send a delegate to the federation meeting to be held in Auckland in October. An interesting lesson was given of how to make a child's slipper from a felt hat and from wool. A largo number of parcels of clothing was received, Which will be distributed to those in need.'

Ngatea.—At a meeting of the Ngatea Institute visitors were present from Kaihere, Kopuarahi and the Waitakaruru Institutes. A parcel competition was won by Mrs. Hay ward, of Waitakaruru.

Ohinewai.—A very interesting and useful demonstration on rag mat making was given by Mrs. E. L. Tucker, who also exhibited some stamp plates, at a meeting of the institute. A competition was won by Miss Linda Welch. Otakiri.—The president, Mrs. Keir, gave a very interesting talk on the work in Karitane Homes, at a meeting of the institute. Mrs. Rutherford demonstrated preserving apples with sulphur. Mrs. Tucker won the competition for the most nutritious school lunch.
