HORSES FOR WELLINGTON.

PAQUITO RESUMES TRAINING,

[from our own correspondent.l

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. A number of Riccarton horses nominated ■ ol * , 0 } sllington meeting do not appear in the list of acceptances for Saturday's racing, ut many of them will bo on hand for the two concluding days. This arrangement has been brought about by the longthy absence and accompanying expense ,in\o\ed in patronising tho whole programme, o do which it will bo necessary' to leave lor the North on Thursday, and the horses would not reach home, again until Tuesday week.

The trainers interested aro F. D. Jones, H. A. Cutts and R. W. King,, who will delay tneir departure until Monday night.- P. D. Johes has Taragona, Dunraven, Moorbird and Belvoir engaged, but, although Belvoir is a certain traveller to fulfil his second day's engagement, the movements of the other tlnee will not be definitely decided upon until tho weights for' the second day appear on Monday.

u t ta will take Winsome Hind and al f ld ,, R - King's representatives mm Aberfeldy and Sharp Thorn Ihursday s departures will be as follows: Tniuf'f'i ( *U ra ' J- Campbell) Amorist (R. Longley), Grand Acre (j. \V. ienninps) Irojlus, Rascal, Royal Mint, Fresh Breeze j. Barr), and cetnpor Paratus (F. E.

Riding engagements have been made by Riccarton horsemen for Saturday's races as tollows:-—-C. Cannont, Semper Paratus; I. iilson, Royal M-hU Fresh Breeze; G. Salt, Amorist, ihurina; G. Humphries, Arrowzone,. Valrewa, Inevitable; J. \V. Jennings, brand Acre; D. O'Connor, Fabriano, Royal oaxon, iroilus and CalJamarfc. A Smart Half-mile. Interest in tho track work at Riccarton this morning v.-as centred in the horses going north. Tho inside of the trial grass provided satisfactory going, albeit slightly holding after a heavy -frost. Rose of Orange,-a half-sister (by Arau'sio) to Lord rhomond and Ephialtes, reeled off naif a mile in 50s. She was nominated for the second and third days at Trentham. but is a doubtful visitor owing to the serious ; illness of her lessee, D. Campbell. Winsome Hind was Been to advantage in' beating Zeebrugge comfortably over six furlongs m 1.18, the last half in 51 3-5s Sharp Thorn Was slightly in front of Straightcourse at the'end of half a mile run m 61s. Shani Thorn ehould. race.prominently at Wellington. Semper Paratus finished better than Gay Crest and Locksley after covering six furlongs in 1.18, the last half in 525, Moorbird narrowly beat Shatter over four furlongs in 51s.

Aberfeldy was always going better than Fortune's Wheel over the concluding stages of a useful mile task. Aberfeldy will be on hand to contest the High-weight Handicap at Trentham on Wednesday. Grand Acre impressed by galloping half a mile in 50a. Grand Aero is partial to heavy going and may spring a surprise on Saturday

Amorist comfortably covered a mile in 1.48, each half taking 545. Amorist is in splendid order after his race at Ashburton and will carry plenty of southern support in his Trentham engagements. Thurina (G. ■ Salt) gave a disappointing display in an attempt to negotiate a round of the country. He ran off at the second of and, colliding with the wing, lost his rider. Thuriiia later got over the two fences safely, but again ran down, the next obstacle and once more dislodged his pilot by jumping the wing. He was not further persevered with and his chance of negotiating the Trentham country does not look bright. Salt will ride him in his engagements. Noteworthy,'s Programme. The West Coast owned and trained Noteworthy was nominated for the hack hurdle races at Wellington, but, owing to a rider being unobtainable to school him. he will not' be taken north. Noteworthy will, remain at Riccarton for the Grand National meeting.

Paquito has rejoined F. D. Jones' team after a lengthy; spell and his 'next appearance in- public will be as a hurdler. He has had his initial' education at home" on the lead? and lias shown a liking for. tha work. He will be given a trial over the Eiccarton • hurdles • al'ler the "Wellington meeting.. Provided hei makes satisfactory progress, Paquito will-be afforded a nomination for hurdle events at the Grand National meeting. F. D. Jones has had another addition to his team in the three-year-old filly Autumn Bird, who has joined her sister. Moorbird. both being owned by i Mr. E. S. Luttrcll. Autumn Bird was.foaled in.July, 1923, and will rank ns a four-year-old in the new season. She has .not yet been raced, but has shown plenty of promise on the track.

TAKANINI HORSES. : CANDIDATES FOR GISBORNE. The only gallop at Takaniui yesterday was a half-mile sprint by Lady Vane (Craig), who recorded 54 2-ss. ■ This filly and her stable mate, Vandyke, are entered at the Gisborne meeting and she iB beini worked regularly. Her track form is satisfactory without being exceptional. The cblts by Roger de Busli—Matidalay and Brazen —Warwhoop in J. T. Jamieson's stable have been gelded and are now running in the paddock. After enjoying a spell of some weeks, Clopton has rejoined J. T. Jamieson's active brigade, looking fresh and well .as a result. Clopton showed improvement on previous foim last autumn, and, being able to stay rather well, may be ix useful horse in .the new season. . Tho name Tokatea havma been disallowed for the Potoa—Unity colt in J. Gray's stably he has been registered under the new title of Night Warrior. ,The brother to Te ilonanui is a very gross customer and he Will require plenty of work to get into racing shjape. ■ . . ■ ~ King March; wlib went amiss in the pastern some weeks ago,: lias been blistered durin" the week and he is not likely to be token up again for sornfe time R Gourlay has Kamehameha. and Nuki Boy'- in good order to undertake the trip to Gisborne. All going -well, they will be shipped south on luesday. Kamehameha should have prospects if he could be relied upon-to forget, his frequent habit of bnulking. It is hoped that on a Ifeft-handed track he may go belter than at Elleslie.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE.. TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP. Dp to the present Lord Val has accomlished nothing to suggest that he is above the ordinary, but he. is an improving young horse, whose form in his next few starts may be better than any lie has yet revealed. Lord Val will be a competitor in the.hack sprints at Trentham and, with A E. Ellis in the saddle, he ,can be expected to give a good account of himself.

The two victories registered by Little Doubt at Te Rapa last month stamped him as a greatly-improved horse and it is confidently expected that lie will add to his winning record shortly. Little Doubt is reported to have trained .on splendid y in tho meantime and as ho is partial to heavy going his prospects of winning a race at, the coining meeting at Trentham should be bright.

A couple of New Zealand-bred horses were among the winners at Park, Perth meeting °n June 27. lhcy were Banket, by Psychology from Orofino, who dead-heated with Ceriman m the Canning Plate and Imperial Guard, ,by \ alkynan from whitianga. who won the Hying Ham icap Banket started at double-figure odds, but Imperial Guard was a good favourite in his race.

Without being set any severe tasks, Rose Eat-bur and Kouranui are working regularly at Ellerslie under the direction of A. Lcmp and they are both thriving on the work thflv are being allotted. Rose Latour halfsistet to Eager Rose, is a good type of mare and may play her part well when the time, con es for her to race. Kouramu has shown m-omise and he was making rapid improvement when a mishap necessitated a stoppage in his work in the autumn.

While being prepared for the Taumarumii meeting Sub-editor was located at Ellersl.e, but W H. Patterson has now taken him out w. For the present Suboditor is beihg. allowed to tnkis things eilsijy, but he will shortly be given a course of with a view to being raced-over schooling witnavie gub . e< j ilor ha 3 s i, own some Aptitude for jumping and he may prove a better horse over hurdles than he was on the flat.

There are few horsesi more partial to heavy going than Prince Val, who should be in h? 8 element at Trentham. where the ground should be entirely to his liking. Prince Val «imv>d a return to form in winning at, his last start and though he is not too reliable Jt ,the barrier %%££?£ With 9 10 he is nicely placed in the open sprint event to-morrow and lie will only require to leave the barrier smartly to seriously trouble the opposition.
