ELLERSLIE NOTES.

TRAINING PREPARATIONS. TOWN BEAUTY JUMPS WELL. UNITED IN WORK AGAIN. As most of iho horses in training at present lmvo 110 immediate engagements, there lius not been u ureal deal of fast work at Elltrslie lately. Yealcrduy tlio No. 3 grass was available for galloping, but it was not used very extensively, and tho comparatively few horses who were allowed to run along were not required to do anything more strenuous than utoful working gallops.

One of tho most interesting pieces of work at Ellerslio yesterday was tho schooling task accomplished by Town Beauty (11. Dulieu) and Justify (Chaplin). They were soul over six hurdles and both fenced woll, although Justify hit tho last fence very hard. Town Beauty looks an improved horso for his racing at tho winter meeting, and he will be a force to be reckoned with in hunters' events at the coming meetings.

A useful working gallop over five furlongs was allotted to Puriri Park, Grout Emblem and Hampton Park, and they all went nicely, particularly Hampton Park, who bears a 111010 solid appearance than ivt any timo previously. Puriri Park and Hampton Park will probably bo raced at the Taumarunui meeting next month, but it will bo later in the year before Great Emblem is called upon to raco. Great Emblem has not been in long from a epoll, but he is coming on nicely, and should do better next season than he did in tho spring. Mr. A. D. Potior has claimed tho name of Capere for his rising l three-year-old gelding by Adjutant from Capable, and Kiltowyn for tho rising two-year-old gelding by Kilbroney from Towyn. These young horses have built up considerably since they were placed in training, and will be in capital condition to tackle fast work when the time comes for them to be sent along in earnest. Capero has been 011 tho easy list for some days with a slight injury, but 110 has now recovered and was out working ugain yesterday. After ft short spell at tlio Auckland Stud Company's farm at Papatoetoe, United has rejoined D. Moraghan's stable at «Ejllerslie. Ho appears to have benefited by the holiday find is in nice order to receive ft preparation for spring racing. United was unlucky not to havo won a. juvenile handicap this season, but nothing like tho best has yet been seen of him, and ho should bo a good prospect for next season, when he should not take long to open his winning account. Tho hunter Billy Boy is being kept in steady work by K. Lewis, and lie may be raced at tho Tauniavunui meeting next month. Billy Boy benefited by tho racing he had at- tho Auckland Winter Meeting and is now carrying considerably more muscle and polish than 110 was a month ago. Billy Boy should be susceptiblo to n good deal more improvement, and ho should bo a profitable horse in tho next' few months, when there will bo some nice races for a horso in his class. HAWKE'S BAY JOTTINGS. TRAINING AT HASTINGS. GREAT CHARTER'S PROGRESS.

[fhom our ow\ coititKSPONnENT.] HASTINGS. Monday. Perfect weather conditions attracted a large number of peoplo to the Hastings track on Saturday to see tho trnining work in preparation for the comin" meetings. Kaokaoroa, looking bright an-' '.veil after his Auckland efforts, worked nicely twice round on tho plough. White Fang did twice round at a good three-quarter pace. Princess Elizabeth (light boy) did once round over tho hurdles in 1.38. She seems pretty well. Callagain did a similar task, but with no speed on. He appears to be a trifle sore. I'm Alone, accompanied by. Skied for the first tlireo furlongs, ran six in 1.20, a fine gallop. Moa Bird covered" tho last four of five furlougs:in 545. . She did not impress. Black ' Flyer, Cloyne and Dapper Boy went a round of the big fences, but did not give very satisfactory displays. Royal Hunting, Royal Routine's brother, did a couple of rounds 011 tho plough, sprinting home the last two furlongs. He is looking well and is an attractive mover. Masher covered six furlongs in 1.21. rather a good gallop for one of his class. Ho was picked up over the last four by Handy, who finished in front. Head Serang and Kahikatoa ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.5, the latter performing the better. Beau Regal and Rigaletto jumped once round over the big country in 1.15. Rigoletto is improving. Gaze and Great Charter galloped a mile in 1.50. Great Charter moved freely and showed sonio speed over tho early stages. Hie makes a slight noise. Pepay, who looks to have dono a certain amount of work, went once round at three-quarter pace 011 the plough. Freehold, with a bit of weight in the saddle, did a milo in 1.50.

Night Speaker and Woo Boy rmi fivo furlongs iri 1.5. The former finished in front and lie is fairly well. The Hunting Sons: chestnut gelding in \V. Young's stable sprinted half a milo on tho plough in 525. He is a likely sort. Lotus Lily sprinted three furlongs in ■los. ~ Chrysology is joining I{. Alexander's stable at Napier Parle almost immediately in view of early spring engagements, Monarchy also will be sent in shortly from Okawa. He had rather a bad timo with his operation.

Gold Trail and Nca Lap sprinted dov.'n the straight on tho course proper, botli moving attractively. Slippery, who appears to be the best of the rising two-year-olds, went down the straight with the Royal Picture gelding in W. King'B stable. The Bold and Bad yearling and tho Diaquenod yearling, both belonging to Mr. C. P. Haldanc, together with Flamingo and Princess Bell, sprinted down tho straight twice. • Tho Bold and Bad yearling is a bold galloper. Raasay's brother, under L. Wilson's charge, also hit out freely on tho course proper. Goshawk and Battlement went once round over the hurdles in 1.42, both giving a good exhibition. My Own and Jenny Divor worked on the plough, doing it comfortably.

PLUNGE THAT FAILED. "MYSTERY HORSE" BEATEN. INCIDENT AT FLEMINGTON. [from our own correspondent.] MELBOURNE. June 11. Flemington was tho sceno of a remarkable plungo on Monday. Entered for tho Rothsay r J,'rinl Stakes was a colt named Gagooln, who was described in the official book as being by Yetman from Dismay. Few people had over heard of tho horse or owner (Mr. H. Graham) and there was great surprise when it was noticed that the colt had been backed down from 20 to 1 to 7 to 4.

" Who is Gngoolit?" everybody naked, but no one could supply the answer to the question. The curiosity of the public spread to tho stipendiary stewards, but the " mystery horse " eventually took his place in the field. Those working the commissions went round tho betting ring taking everything on offer and many thousands of pounds were invested on Gagoola. When the field turned into the straight it looked us if the great coup would be successful, as Gagoola was slightly ill front of Stephanite as tho field turned into the straight, flowover, Stephanite finished too fast for Gagoola and tho "good thing" camo undone. Graham subsequently told the stewards that the colt was as described in tho official book and that he had been registered in Sydnoy on May 11. In a subsequent statement to tho press Graham said that the colt had been trained on u rough farm track at Cabramutta, New South Wales, and that he hud beon so impressed with his form that ho had decided to bring him to Melbourne. Tho race on' Saturday, according to tho ownor, wus tho first in his career. Dismay, who is doscribcd as tho dr.m of Gagoola, is aged 30 years, so that when sho dropped Gagoola she was 20. It is evident that Graham's training methods are thorough, even if they are rough, as Gagoola did not run like tho average novice. ITo picked his way through. tho field liko a veteran and Victorian racing men are looking forward to seeing this fellow again. RACING FIXTURES.
