FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTSyFROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand: Herald of June 17, 1881: It has been resolved by the City Coun oil to open the Free* Public Library front 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. tc 10 p.m. on Sundays. A proposal to form a New Zealand representative-football team to visit Sydnev about July was approved of at s meeting of Auckland footballers yesterday. Messrs. W. W. Robinson, Thomai Henderson, Macky and Burgees were appointed to select four players as the Auckland contingent of the New Zealand team. The new North Shore Ferry Company promises to be a great success. Applica tions for shares are coming in from all parts of Auckland and the suburbs, although naturally the stronghold of; tin new company will be the districts ol Devonport, Lake. Lucas' Creek and Wade. The provisional directors have resolved tc offer a premium for the best model of a ferry steamer, in order to obtain the most suitable boats for the service, \Vhen the design is decided upon tenders will be invited for the construction of the hulls and machinery—the promoters having wisely resolved to have the boats built and- equipped in the province. It will be seen that a cablecram, despatched from Sydney last night, states that smallpox is* increasing in the city and that two fresh _cases nave been reported. Active measures are being adapted to prevent the spread of infection and great alarm is felt. We are reminded of our own danger by. another despatch which informs us that the mail steamer City of New "iork has left Sydney'for Auckland to take on board the San Francisco mails. We would depr#cat 6 any feeling of alarm in Auckland, but. the authorities must see that every precaution ,is taken to ; ; obviate- the intrtfductioQ -.-of - tho disease. here.
