FREE MEAT.
Sir —We read of the Government buying 20,000 sheep in Hawke's Bay to give away. It is not disclosed who were the lucky vendors. Now would not the Hospital Board be helping the country, and particularly the farmers, if they bought some cattle and sheep in the local markets and issued meat on their rations instead of such items as tapioca, rice, sago, haricot beans, blacking and tea. Is it any encouragement for a farmer to come to Auckland to buy local-made goods when we see one of our biggest institutions that collects a large part of its
funds directly from the farmer, issuing Hawke's Bay mutton, China rice, India tea and Dutch East Indies sago and tapioca, etc. Ninety-nine per cent, of that money will never como to New Zealand again. ( Forward Auckland.
