THE CITY RATES.
AN EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT.
COMPLETING THE ESTIMATES. This year's estimates are expected to be ready for presentation to the Auckland City Council not later than at its ordinary meeting 011 July 2. Indeed, the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, yesterday expressed the possibility of the various committees completing their work on the estimates within a week or so, in which case he proposes to call a special meeting of the council to consider the estimates as a whole before the normal date of meeting. The final approval of the meeting will pave the way to an early announcement as to the rates for the year. The rates were fixed at 4s in the pound on the annual value last year. The dotailed items were:—General, Is 6jd; library, Id; hospital and charitable aid, &j(l; drainage, 2^d; sanitation, 2d; special (interest), Is 6jd. . In addition, special rates and charges are made for water.
