BELL HILL SLUICING. HOPE FOR STATE SUBSIDY. , The directors of the Bell Hill Gold Sluicing Company have just completed an intensive investigation of tho claim at Bell Hill, Westland, and havo returned to Christchurch very satisfied with tho development work to date. The completion of the fluming is tho major work still (o be done and it is expected that sluicing operations will be commenced in about three months.

In estimating profits a basis of six grains a cubic yard on the lower half of the face was considered highly remunerative, whereas official tests taken last week by the Government inspector of mines show 43.3 grains of gold a cubic yard at 90ft. from the bottom. Average tests give a yield of 14grs. a cubic yard and it is estimated that 150 yards of wash will be treated an hour. » Application has been made to the Mines Department for a Government subsidy, and in consequence exhaustive tests and investigations were made by the department's inspector, but although these tests proved highly satisfactory, the directors, in view of the depressed financial conditions and economy measures now being put in oporation by the State, have not placed great reliance on monetary assistance being granted.
