RUMINATION.
AUTOMATIC PROCESS. When tho cow begins to ruminate an automatic nervous control goes into effect. 'I his is the rumination centre located iri the brain, and it ensures co-ordination of all tho factors involved in this complicated process. Tho lips of the. oesophageal groove open, permitting the partial vacuum in the oesophagus to draw material br.ck into this tube. At the same time tnere is increased pressure in the abdomen, and this helps to force food into the oesophagus. Whereas the normal function of the oesophagus is to contract its muscular walls in su:h a way that food is carried from tho mouth to the stomach, under tho stimulation of the rumination centre it does just tho opposite, contracts at the bottom first, and a wave of contraction carries the material which is in tho oesophagus back to the mouth. The water up:.n which is feed was washed into the oesophagus is immediately re-swallowed, but the solid material is thoroughly ground and then ,*e-swallowed.
