CHARGES OF ASSAULT.
THREE MEN CONVICTED. Charges of assault and of being idle and disorderly were denied in tho Police Court yesterday by Thomas Hudson, aged 30, ship's fireman. Police evidenco was that accused had struck another man outside a city hotel on Saturday, complainant stating he had later missed £2O. After he had been informed that it was accused's seventh appearance before tho Court this year, the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, sentenced him to one month's imprisonment for assault, convicting and discharging him on the other charge. A plea of not guilty was entered by Mr Noble for Alfred Wallace Mackenzie, aged 30 labourer, who was charged with assaulting John Wilson, manager of the City Mission's night shelter, on Sunday night. It was stated the manager had ordered another inmate to be ojected and accused had interfered, later committing the assault when ho was being ejected. Accused was sent to prison for seven days. A charge of assaulting a Hindu hawker, Sona Kouvji, was preferred against Henry Lee, aged 30, ship's fireman, for whom Ml". Aekins pleaded not guilty. After complainant and two other Hindus had stated that accused struck complainant in a hotel bar on Saturday without provocation, accused said the Hindu had insulted him and was about to strike an old man. Accused was fined £2, with 15s costs.
