PROPOSED FIRE BOARD.

MOUNT EDEN DISTRICT. CONSIDERATION DEFERRED. A motion that a poll of ratepayers should bo taken on a proposal to make application to the Governor-General to declare tho borough district a fire district under tho Fire Brigades Act, 1926, was placed beforo the Mount Fden Borough Council last evening by Mr. R. J. Mills.

The mover said that if the proposal were carried tho money spont on the poll would bo received back three-fold. He knqw of no borough in the Dominion of a population around 20,000 excepting Mount Eden and Mount Albert whoso brigado was not under a fire board. Tho council would not lose control of the brigade as the representation, two council members, two insurance company representatives and one Government representative, would give it as much control as anybody. The objects of the rnovo were efficiency and economy, Mr. Mills continued. '1 ho expenses of fire boards were limited, so there could be no fear of extravagance. If the brigade were under a board there would be no more than two permanent men as at present, the rest being auxiliaries. The position now, with the suburban hydrants different in size from those of the city, was ridiculous. In seconding the motion, Mr. J. J Mu]viliill said th*> saving in-the first year would be £350 and thereafter £SOO an nually. After some discussion further consideration of the proposal was deferred for six week 3.
