"GOAT CHASING."

By LUCY FYERS. Rangiriri. (age 16). Original. Buddy caught his horse, let Rex, his dog off the chain and set out to chase goats on the hills. When he arrived at the ridge where the goats usually were, there was not a goat to be seen, but he sent Rex through the bush and the goats soon appeared. They ran down tho ridge in front of him, and proceeded down to a swamp at the bottom. Buckly rode down about half way at the back of them and Rex chased them on. The father billy-goat turned round and faced about, so "Buckly got off his horse, tied her to a ti-tree bush and chased the billy on. As they neared the swamp the goats began to divide up. Rex followed a young nanny, so Buckly decided he would catch her. She ran down one track, turned into another, then round a corner and headed back towards the others. Rex was close on her heels and Buckly a chain or two behind. Then suddenly* the nanny disappeared and so did Rex. Tho track ran straight ahead and they had turned no corners. When Buckly raced on he found a large subterranean channel about four feet deep right in front of him and Rex at tho bottom. He hauled Rex out, but could see no sign of the goat. He didn't want the poor thing to die in there, especially as ho had chased her there. Ho got in the hole and looked around. There was one small tunnel leading down the bill. He did not wish to go down it for fear ho should meet the nanny awaiting him with her horns ready, so he climbed out and wondered what ho would do. Glancing down tho track he nearly fell over, for there was tho nanny running on down ahead of him. The channel had an opening further down. Ho did not catch any goats but ho had an exciting day.
