ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

DEFEAT OF AUCKLAND. NAVY GAINS FINE VICTORY. BRILLIANT GAME WITNESSED. Thrilling play wrie witnessed nt Blandford Park yesterday whsii the annual Association football representative contest between Auckland and the Navy was staged before a largo attendance of spectators, the match resulting ia a win for the latter by five goals to four. The game was exceptionally pleasing tc watch, both teams adopting an open and scientific style, a slight superior ity giving the Navy side a well-deserved victory. The ground was heavy in places but this did not affect the players to any serious extent, the game being contested throughout at a surprising speed under such conditions. Among those present at the game ivere the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. VV. Hutchison, and Rear-Admiral Blake. A Navy Dand rendered selections during the afternoon. Following were the teams:— Auckland.—Batty, Gerrard, Reid, Wright, Christie, Jones, lnnes, Dunsmore, Spencer, Liislop, Kny. . Navy.—iillman, Hunt, Miles, Bradley, Luke, Cotton, Elwell, Milne, Leonard, Uames, Scott. The Auckland team came away with a great rush right from the whistle, but play raced to the other end. Haines sending back to Luke, who in turn connected up with Scott on the left. The winger took the ball in his str. de, outmanoeuvred the Auckland. half, and ran on to crash the ball past Batty. Auckland found a flaw in the iNavy defence with a combined forward movement, lnnes Hashing across a brilliant centre which Spencer s.epped over oil purpose, allowing liislop to whip the ball into the corner ot the net. lnnes gave a further sample ol his worth when he flashed down the sideline in sparkling fashion with the ISavy backs in lull cry. He crossed accurately, the ball clearing the goalmouth, but Kay, who had moved in quickly, rammed home a beautiful shot, which had the Navy goalkeeper well beaten. Navy was putting plenty of dash in:o its work, but met with solid resistance from the Auckland hai\es. Dunsmore made the way for the next goal. Spencer stepping in at the right moment to add the finishing touch. Navy came strongly, the forwards working better. A chain of oasses took the ball to Scott on the left tnnk, who swung accurately, the ball striking the crossbar and rebounding. A melee in the goalmouth followed, and before the Auckland backs could recover the. ball was forced into the net. Excitement was inter.se when Haines back-passed to Leonard at the height of a Navy onslaught the latter wasting no time in putting the ball in the net. The score at half-time was: Auckland, 3; Navy. .1. Navy electrified at the start of the second snell with s, brilliant frontal move. Scott finishing with a powerful drive which just passed outride the post Navy gradually assumed i dominance and hammered away at the Auckland goal. Milne snapped in good shot which Christie appeared to accidentally block with his arm. A penalty was giver, however, and Leonard shot hard Tnd low to give Navy the lead A fresh reverse was to come, Elwell putting across i oerfect centre which Haines guided into thenet" ith his head. The exchanges were still exceedingly fast. Auckland showed traces of its lost combination, Hislop transferring to Kay. who finalised the movement with a characteristic dash followed by a fine screw Bhot, which sent the ball int the back of the goal. Haines had to leave the field it this stage with an injury to the leg Kay almost repeated nis previousmove but the efficiency of the Navy K° a ' keep " was the deciding facto.-.
